I am sittin’ here like a big kid watching Beauty & The Beast, and got this urge to rock my snuggie and sit at my desk and write up this review for you lovely people. I wanted to show you all four of the Urban Decay Big Fatty colored mascaras ($17 each). I ordered these from Hautelook the last time they had an Urban Decay sale, and they were around $4/each, so…not a bad deal, right? Well…
Each Urban Decay Big Fatty colored mascara is decorated with a psychedelic 70′s print and appropriate font. There’s a colorful 7.5g/0.26 US oz. of product, meant to give your lashes some fierce bangitybangness.
They come in four colors:
- Electric Blue – bright turquoise
- Flipside – bright teal
- Black Cherry – burgundy
- Indigo – ink blue (looks like a deep violet to me)
If you love the extra-thickening powers of Big Fatty Mascara, round out your collection with these wearable shades. Turquoise and navy hues give brown and blue eyes a jolt, purple shades make green eyes more dangerous, and burgundy adds drama to any eye color-a refreshing alternative to basic black.

PROS
- Incredible color payoff!
- Shows up wonderfully on very dark lashes (mine are black)
- Because they’re so pigmented, you may not even need two coats
- Provides decent lash thickness
CONS
- Dries out quickly in the tube
- Can flake pretty badly
- Urban Decay could have sealed these to help prevent them from drying out so quickly
- Slightly fume’y…causing light irritation
OVERALL
My review is pretty subjective, only because I do not know if the mascaras I received are even how Urban Decay usually makes these. There is a huge possibility that they’ve been sitting on the Hautelook shelves for a good year before they arrived to me. Or, this could very well be how they are. I’ll get into the cons a little further, but here’s a positive..they are super pigmented! Crazy pigmented. My lashes are very black, and with just one coat of this mascara you can see the color very vividly. The only color that didn’t show up on me as well was Black Cherry — but my lashes are black, and it’s already a dark color. It’s pretty though, and would pop on blond or even brown lashes.
To elaborate a bit more on my cons, I think that if Urban Decay sealed these mascaras then there would be less of a “Did I get a bad mascara?” ponderation, and more certainty that it just might be the actual formula. Since I can only speak on the mascaras that I have, if they are dried out, it’s a shame because they’re actually very bright, gorgeous mascaras. Sadly, my favorite color of the four — Electric Blue, was also the driest of the bunch. I gently flicked my lashes around after it dried and several flake-balls fell off. I was pretty heartbroken, the color is amazing. The other three also felt slightly dried out, and were less clumpy than Electric Blue — I still don’t know if that’s because they’re slightly younger than the Electric Blue mascara, or if that’s the formula prime of their production. Since these were a little dried out, they were also a tad fume’y. My eyes didn’t water full-on, but they had that “someone’s blowing air in my eye” feeling — even hours later. That sucks.
I’m going to give Urban Decay the benefit of the doubt and say that these mascaras aren’t normally like this. I know my other mascaras turn like this when they’re starting to get too much air into the tube. I’ve also noticed this happens a lot more with smaller mascara tube sizes. You know how MAC used to give away those mini Zoom Lash mascara samples? These are around the same size as those, and therefore dry out at the same rate. Most mascaras can last me a good 6-8 months with cycled use — but anything in the smaller packaging only lasts about 2-3 months. So yea…I said all that (LOL!) just to say that they do dry out fast — or at least that’s my assumption.
I’m very curious to know if anyone else has tried these, but who might have purchased them directly from Sephora or the Urban Decay website — and if there are any differences/similarities in formula. I did get these from Hautelook, and it took about 2 weeks to ship..so, who knows. For now, I have to give these mascaras the following grade below. Who knows, this may change if I’m able to try a guaranteed fresh mascara and compare.
RATING
(a very hopeful C+ lol)
Availability: Urban Decay

I don’t think you got a bad one. I had the original Big Fatty and it dried out SUPER fast and got just down right gross and clumpy. Not where it’s at. Love the color though
that sucks!
I love the colors. I’ve been wanting to try these. I may still pick up one or two just to see if they’re like this. Just for the color pay off.
i’m gonna try to find a way to make them work, the pigmentation is gorgeous. i just hate that the formula has to be so gunky
Great review, I like black cherry looks like it be used daily, it’s very pretty
they’re all very gorgeous. i hope they change the formula though.
i’m SHOCKED at the color payoff! i’ve never seen a colored mascara that showed up vividly on dark lashes
its amazing, im so sad to learn the formula is like this though
Wow, those colors are amazing! I love Black Cherry…I’m going to buy that immediately, LOL. Indigo is also really pretty. Thanks for the review!
they’re all very gorgeous colors, i really need to find out if this is the actual formula or if mine are dried out though. its killing me!
I’ve never purchased this product, but I did try it out at sephora when I was trying to buy a fun colored mascara and it was shitty then too. Personally I adore the tokidoki mascara. I have the blue and the green ones and they are amazing; I can’t wait until my next sephora trip to purchase the purple one.
LMAO! thanks for the tip, i’ll check those out
WOW, these look gorgeous! My favourite is the Indigo shade. It’s a shame they flake and dry so fast.
yea the color is really amazing, but i hate that mine are so dried out
Great review. I don’t know where I’d wear those colors out lol. Quickl question if you don’t mind. Are you still using the Clarisonic brush? I just placed an order for the Mia one like 5 min ago lol. Iremember how great your review was and my skin has been looking dull. Ugh. Thanks girl!!
oh absolutely, i cannot live w/o my clarisonic!!! get it!!
I agree with you, they probably are short dated. That’s why I avoid purchasing products on sale, I’m afraid I’m getting something that will go bad pretty soon.
I love the colours, by the way! I always wanted some pretty awesome coloured mascaras!
someone just told me that the formula is normally like this, so that is very disappointing to learn
No u didn’t get a bad tube, they r actually very drying. I bought these full price at sephora and they dried out so fast, flakes and clups. It was the same as you are experiencing. The formula sucks.
awwww man!! that really sucks to hear. the color payoff is fantastic but yes, if this is the actual formula then i’ll have to pass. such a shame!
I wanted to inform you that I’ve nominated you for “The Versatile Blogger” Award. Thank you for your fun to read and informative beauty blog.

These are so pretty! I saw these in wal-mart the other day. I have to go back and buy one & try it. =)
Could you do a look with one of these mascaras? Pretty please! =)
I’m late…but….I bought the electric blue from Sephora because I had the same color in high school. It was some cheap crap from Caboodles but the pigment was awesome. I never saw another one like it so I figured I’d try this. it was really dry and flaky. By the end of the night I had blue dust particles on my cheeks and I’m entirely too light for that…smh. I added some lash gel (mine was from The Body Shop) to see what would happen and it improved it tremendously.
You can or can’t try it, it worked for me. I lost some pigmentation but not enough to matter much.
I ordered them directly from urban decay, and I can say, from my experience, it was not just YOUR tubes that were dry and flaky… The fine customer service over at Urban Decay, when responding as to whether it was just a fluke or whether they were just flaky/crappy by nature, gave me the instructions on how to return them with no response to my questions or apologies for my dissatisfaction…. I did keep the mascaras, however, as you simply cannot find those colors in other brands much yet, but I will not be repurchasing… I’ve been a huge UD fan for a long time, and their general lack of concern for my questions rubbed me wrong… along with their dry cakey mascara!!
They look pretty but probably good thing you got them on sale! great blog!
The colors are vry pretty, but I don’t know when I’d where them! LOL, after all, I’m in middle school. And, yes, they do look a little flaky, just a little, though. Thanks for the review!
