I can’t even begin to tell you how far drugstore foundations have come over the years. I remember back in high school, every girl who wore foundation had a ring around her shirt collar. It was a dead, orangey giveaway that was never flattering. I always saw it after gym class, when she’d be all sweaty and crap. Her makeup would melt off and party on her shirt collar -ugh. I never wanted to have that symbolic orangey brown makeup collar so I avoided foundations altogether. I just felt they’d look cakey and unnatural, so I was like “Screw it!”.
Years have passed, and I’ve found a new love. Revlon Colorstay Foundation with Softflex ($8.99 – $13.99, 1 oz.) is the best drugstore foundation I’ve ever used. I love it and I especially love that it doesn’t transfer. What do I mean by “transfer”? Well, any foundation, no matter how much or how little you spend, will rub off if you rub it off. They’re not stains, they don’t sink into your skin, so they can be removed if you rub your face on something. But, there are some foundations that just after a tiny bit of sweating, will break down and drip and slide right off your face onto your clothes. This is reminiscent of what I’d see in high school and it was gross.

You may notice how each bottle says it’s the same color, but the one on the right is slightly darker than the one on the left. I would assume it has to do with the SPF. The Normal/Dry formula has an SPF of 12, and is slightly lighter than the Combo/Oily formula, which doesn’t have SPF. I could be wrong, so if that’s not the case someone let me know. All I do know is that even though they vary slightly in color they both match me when blended in. I wear the Normal/Dry in the winter, and the Combo/Oily in the summer when I’m a shade darker, but you can do whatever you want.

This stuff is indeed my holy grail drugstore foundation (so far). I absolutely love this foundation and will continue to buy it — I’m already on my third bottle! I’m wearing this foundation in this post here.
PROS
- Applies easily with a foundation brush or fingers.
- It lasts on my face all day.
- I don’t notice any oxidizing — meaning it darkens or turns orange on the skin throughout the day.
- It looks natural and flawless.
- It’s lightweight, I often forget I’m even wearing it.
- Both formulas are oil-free.
- It’s transfer-resistant. I can sweat in this and it doesn’t drip onto my clothes, water can get on my face and it still doesn’t trip onto my clothes.
CONS
- It doesn’t come in a wide variety of shades.
- It doesn’t have a pump.
- It’s a drugstore foundation and you can’t really test these, unless you have the balls to open the bottle like I do and swatch it before you buy.
The way my foundation performs for me, may not be the case for you, but I seriously feel that this foundation is priced so that just about anyone can afford to try it at least once and see how it works. You may get a good deal at CVS, they often have a BOGO deal where you can buy one at full price and get a second bottle for free. Definitely give this one a try, and if you hate it, you can return it. If you love it, you’ll probably continue to buy it like I will
RATING

I love Revlon ColorStay foundation! It’s the perfect foundation to wear if you are on a budget. I have the Oily/Combination in Cappuccino since like you said you get a bit darker in the summer time and I’m glad that I bought it just in time for summer. It does suck that it doesn’t have a pump and there are times that I try not to pour out too much on the back of my hand if I want to apply foudation and I had to end up wipping off the excess.
So glad you’ve posted this because I’ve been wondering what kind of foundation is good for a woman on a budget! Being as though I am new to the make up world, your blog has been really helpful! Keep ‘em coming!
I tried this foundation years ago and HATED it and I heard someone else say it was their favorite so it was at CVS for half off and I snagged one. They must have changed their formula. I can’t take the pump-less bottle since I have a 2 pump rule. It was making me not want to use it so I bought a 1oz tube with a small opening.
please please please do not advocate testing products in the store . That is just gross. i believe i have rash on my lips right now from people doing that shit. Why dont you just buy it? Every one knows that if you dont like drugstore make up you can get a refund no questions asked. Buyit try it in the sunlight and if you dont like it return . what is so hard about that.
I’m not necessarily advocating people test things in stores, but in drugstores especially, things are always wrapped so that you can’t test them. If you’re buying something that has been opened and/or used, then you should probably take a closer look at what you’re buying. Most lip products come with a seal, so if the seal is broken, don’t buy it. Someone has always opened something in the drugstore, so i take those and swatch the back of my hand if its a foundation. i dont test anything else in drugstores but foundation because i dont have time to run back and forth to the store to keep trying 11tybillion colors. but lip products? no. please look at what you’re buying to avoid your lip problem.
not all of them are wraped specifically milani lip glosses, also loreal and maybelline lipsticks. As matter of fact the revlon foundations are not wraped at all(at least at my store) i would never buy something that has obviously been used. However people can stick there fingers into foundation or try a lipstick that hasnt been used and no one would be none the wiser. even if you didnt open it someone did which is my point. Is it unresonable to believe that stuff you buy in a store should be new and unused? Everyone is busy but everyone should have time for hygiene and just plain simple courtesey
to be honest, i’m a huge germaphobe. i hate hate hate testing makeup at any counter, store, whatever. but sadly, it has to be done so you know what you’re getting. i always use the back of my hand but not everyone does so you just have to be careful what you’re buying. i picked up a MAC blush and took it home and saw a fingerprint. i had to drive all the way back to get a new one. it was a bitch to do, but i shoulda checked it first like i usually do. when im at the drugstore, i dont swatch anything except foundations because they’re so iffy. so my only advice is to be careful what you buy, try reaching for things in the back, and inspect the product because you can always tell when someone’s been in it.
Im witcha on the testing, I was in MAC the other day, and this lady just waltz up and put the lipstick all up on her mouth, I almost barfed, ewwww….yuck….nasty, I always check my stuff, especially lippies! Oh I love colorstay Imma go get my Caramel when there is a bogo, cuz im mixing rich ginger/cappuccino now!
I LOVE this stuff! So far I’ve only tried the normal/dry formula, but that’s only because I’m having a hard time finding it. I don’t know if that’s because it’s more popular, or if stores carry less of it. But yeah, all in all I really like that stuff!
I really like this foundation…It is just far to heavy for in the Texas Heat…..But during the winter months it is great…..Caramel matches me well in both formulas…although the oily matches me better and I have dry skin…go figure
I really like the PhotoReady as well…But the color match is not the best for my skin
dang! i wear this in the heat a lot and it never feels heavy for me, and girl we have so much humidity in VA it’s not even funny! what i do love though, is taking a kabuki and just using my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish as a foundation when i don’t feel like wearing anything. i love it.
Hey Resha,
I was wondering do you think the pump from MAC would fit on the Revlon Colorstay bottle? I was gonna go purchase it if it does.
This is my absolute favorite liquid, especially of the drugstore variety. It’s also a perfect match for my skin. I’ve never had that before.
Shahanastyle,
which color do you use? From your pic it seems that you and I share similar complexions. Please let me know. Thanks!
I just discovered your website and I love it. I’ve been using ColorStay for a while now, but have noticed when it gets on my clothes, it doesn’t come off. I have put my shirts in the laundry with bleach and tons of soap and it still doesn’t come off! I’m worried about what this foundation is doing to my face if it can’t even come off my clothes with bleach. What do you think?
