I know you’re thinking “Damn, another NYX post?!”, but I promise you guys I’m not working for NYX. I just happen to have a decent amount of their products and I love just about all of what I own. I was rummaging thru my stash this morning, looking for a red lipstick other than my trusty MAC So Scarlet (LE). I wanted to show another color from another brand some love today, and then I remembered two shades by NYX that I couldn’t go wrong with. I swear finding things you haven’t used in a while and rediscovering why you love them is such a fabulous feeling. Do you guys realize it’s 2010 and there are still women out there who haven’t attempted a sexy red lip?? Mainly because they’re terrified at the very thought of rocking a bright, bold red lip. Are you one of them?
NYX makes really great, creamy lipsticks for embarrassingly low prices. If you’re afraid of red, but wanna get your feet wet and try a few colors without spending $14+ on a single lipstick, I recommend trying the following…
- NYX Lips “Snow White” lipstick – comparable to MAC’s Dubonnet lipstick, just a bit more red, Dubonnet is slightly browner.
- NYX “Chaos” Round lipstick – a brighter version of MAC’s So Scarlet lipstick. So Scarlet is a tad deeper.

- Chaos is a creamy blue-based red with very subtle fuchsia sheen. If you look close enough you can see super tiny sparkles, but this doesn’t translate onto your lips as gritty or anything (I promise you won’t feel what you may see). It’s just what gives the lipstick it’s character. This one also has lots of sheen to it upon application but like Snow White, that sheen will eventually fade and you’ll have a gorgeous red matte stain on your lips.

- Snow White is a really pretty semi-matte deep red color, that I find to be very neutral and forgiving. It’s slightly more red and a tad brighter than MAC’s Dubonnet (which is very warm), but at the end of the day they’re in the same boat. I feel that anyone warm or cool toned can definitely rock this color and look amazing in it. It’s warm without being too warm for cooler skin-tones. It’s semi-matte because it’s a totally flat color but has a nice sheen to it when first applied. After a while, the sheen does wear off and you’re left with a nice stain.
I didn’t find either one of the NYX lipsticks to be overly drying, and both had really good staying power. To prevent the crustiest lips in the world, I always balm my lips up before applying lipstick. Let the balm soak into your lips for about ten minutes, wipe away any excess with your finger (tissue will dry it out), and then apply. However, they will transfer pretty easily, so avoid kissing anyone with these. Both are super creamy and smooth and incredibly opaque — they are not sheer at all.
Whenever I wear red lipstick, I really don’t like to put anything else on my face that will distract you from my already bright ass lip. This isn’t necessarily a “rule”, but it’s a factor you should consider. I also don’t do bright pink blush with a red lip because that’s automatically gonna have me looking like a clown and give me that “obvious” look I can’t stand. I usually rock a bright bold red lip with golden skin, eyeliner, neutral eyeshadow (if I have time) and tons of mascara. However, red lipstick can look FIERCE with sexy smokey eyes.
RED FLAG
When you first apply red lipstick, it can be a little daunting. Your initial reaction may be “Whoa!” and you may very well hate it. I hated red lipstick when I first tried it years back, but that was because I was trying the wrong reds, and I wasn’t used to it at all. Such a stark change can be a turn-off at first and freak you out. Not every red is created equal. You have a selection of warm, yellow, cool, and neutral reds. Play around with them all to find one that suits you best. Don’t automatically think that just because you’re warm-toned you can’t wear a cool red, or vice versa. Buy a red that works for you, and try it a few times and you might grow to love them like I did. It takes getting used to for lots of people. The only red lipstick I personally stay away from are yellow-toned reds that make the teeth look more yellow. Neutral, warm and cool reds? I’m all for those.
OVERALL
These aren’t the only red lipsticks made by NYX, but they’re two of my favorites. Since they’re so cheap, you can afford to buy several different red colors and figure out what works and what doesn’t. I’m warm/olive-toned, but I’m clearly wearing both of these colors. If I can wear these, I think you guys should at least try it…they’re both cheaper than a value meal, so what do you have to lose? I wanted to show these two beautiful and inexpensive red lipsticks to you guys who are afraid of red, but need that extra push to go ahead and just play around with bolder colors.
Stop being afraid and relax…it’s just makeup

Thanks for this post. I have a few red lipsticks, and I am afraid to try it because it seems so loud. If that’s the right word?
I need to pick these up that you mentioned and try them out.
don’t be afraid hun. what i did was put my red lip on in the house and just look at myself in the mirror a few times thru the day and i warmed up to it. it does take getting used to, but red is beautiful on any skin-tone and you should rock it proudly
I need to break out Kanga Rouge lipstick more often! I’m thinking of a look to do with Kanga Rouge lipstick right now!
Kanga-Rouge is SO PRETTY! i cant believe i don’t have that one
Just like all of your other posts, this one was great! Girl, I’ve told so many of my friends about your blog. Most of the things you recommend I try out and end up LOVING (Ex. Bliss foaming face wash, clarisonic, rebel lipstick to name a few).
I have a small request (I’m sure you have a billion already lol). Could you do sort of a part II with the red lip and show us an example of a smokey eye with a red lip? I can’t recall seeing that before, but I know you will deliver.
Thanks!! =)
Brittany
Brittany that seriously means a lot. That’s very sweet of you!! thanks so much
I could totally do a look for you, I’m writing down a bunch of looks so I can keep this place busting with new stuff at all times. Thanks for all of your support <3
I was a red lip virgin until this past winter…I was on allwholesalecosmetics.com, clicked the wrong link and ended up with a red lipstick. I figured that I’d try it since I already had it in my hand. It was ugly as sin lmao…but it was KINDA sexy so I bought a few different shades of red and now I’m a red lip fiend.
My skin is such a weird yellow/olive but my favs (so far) are:
YSL Gloss Pur in Pure Redcurrant
Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick in Top Tomato
YSL Rouge Volupte in Red Muse and Red Temptation
Wet n Wild in Red Hot (I know, it’s like a dollar but it left my lips SUPER hydrated!)
ur so lucky you can wear tomato red lipsticks. i think they’re so pretty but they look awful on me
I’m a red lipstick lady but haven’t worn any lipstick in ages. am so glad to see this review, a good quality lipstick at an affordable price yaay for my tiny splurge budget! Am bookmarking and following, hope to see more reviews and swatches to come. Thanks.

Girl, you know how I feel about red lips! :] Two more colours to add to the list.. thanks for the recommendations & the fabulous article.
Girl I have one tube of red lipstick that I’m sooo scared of its like the black plague! I don’t bother it and it doesn’t bother me! Lol…
Girl I am so shocked to hear that from YOU of all people LOL!! You are so bold with your looks yet you’re afraid of red lipstick?? SAY IT AINT SO! i’m gonna need you to put it on and rock it accordingly, i know Dubonnet would look incredibly beautiful on you. that is the safest red lipstick ever. pleeease try it
I’ll see about snow white it’s pretty!! but I’m soo skeptical! I went out yesterday after reading your African Queen post and got that lipgloss it’s really pretty but I think it look weird on me… could be that when I tried it I wasnt wearing makeup… I usually wear nude lips and I’m tryna get outta that!

LMAO girl u are a trip!
Hey, love your blog. I follow both of your accounts on twitter and I love that you’re useful and hilarious
Anywhoooo, enough ball-jiggling, here’s my question: Isn’t it true that part of loving your red lip is choosing the right lip liner? I’m just trying to figure out whether you used lip liner for these looks (mummy says never go without!) or if you just put them on over the balm.
Thanks girl! And keep going, you’re becoming my fave beauty blog
::waiting for the “neutral work look”::
i’m totally doing a neutral tutorial this weekend
to be honest, i dont always wear a liner with my red lipstick and i never have problems with it feathering. i think it depends on the kind of lips you have. some people absolutely need liner, and some don’t. i do wear liner with certain reds just to blend the colors better, but not for the reason of feathering or bleeding. its really all about preference. but i always balm my lips away prior to any lip color, even gloss. and thanks for following
<3 rofl @ ball juggling!
I’m 40 years old & I have NEVER worn nor owned a red lipstick! Now I have no excuses not to try one out now, huh? LOL Thanks so much for this post!!
WOW! Yes, you definitely should try it. I even picked up a gorgeous red by Wet n Wild the other day, I’ll review it soon. But you can buy gorgeous red’s for cheap!
I used to be afraid…But nothing to me is sexier than a nude eye…black liner and RED Hot lips!!!
I Love NYX Snow White
agreed!!! thats such a hot combo, and very classic!
Great post. I have MAC Ruby Woo, still don’t have the guts to wear it out (yeah, I know, pitiful ha). You look absolutely pretty with red lips!
The thing that really got me over my fear of bright lipstick was clear lipliner. It works the same as pigmented ones but you can match it with any lip color without worrying about blending. Some of the drugstore brands make them, much cheaper than the “reverse lip liners” that mid range brands make.
omggggggg thank you so much for this post! my skintone has a little more red undertones than yours and i’ve been looking for the perfect red but haven’t been able to find one. they’re either too berry (don’t get me wrong, i do love berries) or too orange. i’ll def look into buying some!
Hi Girl!!
Let me say that the Nyx Lipliner “ Plush Red´´ is just perfect!!!
Best Regards
Thanks for your post! It was really helpful. Sad to say, I’m one of those who has NEVER worn a red lip, but I’d like to. The hardest part is finding one that will flatter my skin tone. You suggested the two NYX colours…the Snow White, what colour lipliner would you wear with this? I’ve seen some red lipliners from NYX but it’s hard to distinguish between the two shades (Hot Red/Plush Red). I am warm, with golden undertones.
Thank you so much for your post. First things first, you are a beautiful girl…from one sista to another.
I am a huge makeup fan. I don’t play when it comes to my makeup. Yesterday I went to mac to get a new Desire lipgloss and mentioned to the girl that I really wish I could wear red but because of my job and my dark skin color, I don’t think its appropriate. She told me that I was crazy and the way I dress, I have to wear a red. So she put the dubbonnet on and lined it with chestnut. I did not like it at first. I felt like I looked like some black girl from the 50s that someone was dressing up to look like a fool. I wore it all day and now I am feeling it. I was going to go today and purchase it but I will try and check out the NYX like you recommended.
Thanks for putting up some alternatives to the dubbonnet.
